1831 $2 1/2 PR64 Cameo NGC.<p>The reverse die used to strike all the 1831 Quarter Eagles (including the proofs) was first used to produce all the Quarter Eagles of this type through 1834, including the very rare proof strikings of 1833 and 1834. Because all 1831 Quarter Eagles were struck from the same die pair, there has been some confusion in the past about the proof or business strike status of certain coins. We unequivocally believe this piece to be a proof striking. The fields are extraordinarily deep in their reflectivity. Granted, there is a small patch of mint frost below the eagle's left wing, but this appears to be diagnostic as the Eliasberg coin also showed such a streak of frost. This apparently was just from an unpolished area on the die, which is not uncommon on early proofs. The striking details are fully brought up and crisp in all areas. In spite of the use of this die to strike Quarter Eagles in previous years, the dies were obviously repolished prior to striking the proofs for this year. The devices are heavily frosted which yields a strong cameo effect against the illimitable depth of reflectivity in the fields. There are no obvious or truly detracting blemishes on either side of this lovely coin. There are a few marks and specks of color that positively identify it as the Pittman coin; specifically, a very shallow angling mark across the cheek of Liberty, a tiny mark between stars 4 and 5, and a small planchet flake in the left reverse field below the E in UNITED.Ex: "J.F.
