1831 $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Breen-6134, BD-1, R.4. The Capped Head quarter eagles and half eagles, coined during the second, third, and fourth decades of the 19th century, are among the scarcest gold type coins. In the case of the half eagles, the scarcity is due to extremely low survival rates compared to the mintages. The quarter eagles are rare due to their low mintages and similar low survival rates. In 1831, just 4,500 quarter eagles were minted, and only 75 to 100 of those survive today, a mere 2% survival rate.
Sharply detailed with satiny greenish yellow-gold luster, the surfaces have only a few minor marks to limit the grade. The obverse field is slightly reflective and the reverse field is prooflike. An attractive piece. Census: 8 in 62, 26 finer (2/08).

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
