1831<$2 1/2> AU58 NGC. Bass-3028, Breen-6134, R.4. William Kneass succeeded Robert Scot as Chief Engraver following Scot's death in 1823. While he did not replace Scot's Capped Head Left motif on the Quarter Eagle, Kneass modified this design and introduced smaller stars and letters, and redesigned the portraits of Liberty and the eagle to give them a more professionally finished look. Perhaps most notably, he implemented beaded borders surrounded by high, plain raised rims produced by the newly invented "close collar." The low mintage 1831 (4,520 pieces), along with the 1830 and 1832, is more difficult to locate in all grades than the first-year 1829. The specimen we offer in this sale features richly toned, deep yellow-gold surfaces that retain considerable luster. Every feature is well defined, and only a few small marks are encountered. In sum, this is a breathtaking coin whose eye appeal is equally as impressive as its technical quality.
