1831 10C PR65 NGC. JR-2, R.3 as a business strike, but R.7 as a proof. The second T in STATES is perfectly centered over the I in PLURIBUS, and the 8 in the date is centered between a pair of denticles. Early United States Dimes, published in 1984 by the John Reich Collectors Society stated that JR-2 "is clearly scarce and difficult to locate in EF condition. Finest seen is EF-40 ... At least three proofs have been seen from this pair of dies." The "Dime Book," as it is colloquially known to the hobby, states that proofs were also struck from the JR-4 marriage. In the 1992 Stack's auction of the legendary Floyd T. Starr collection, the cataloger noted for lot 356, "fewer than 10 proofs are believed to survive. Missing from the Bareford, Hawn, and Garrett sales." The Eliasberg collection also lacked a proof 1831 dime. NGC and PCGS have certified a total of 26 proofs for this date, although their die varieties and the number of resubmissions are unknown.
This is a magnificent proof type coin that has full definition on the portrait and eagle. The denticles are sharply squared off, unlike on business strikes which tend to show a slope between the denticle edge and the field. The flashy fields display light almond-gold toning, while the borders exhibit slightly deeper rose-red and aqua-blue shades. Thorough examination beneath a loupe fails to find hairlines, contact marks, or carbon. It appears that the importance of the present piece was immediately recognized, and it was carefully set aside for future generations to admire.
From The Fleur Wales-Baillie Collection, benefiting the Khumbula Thina Trust.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
