1831<10C> MS65 NGC. JR-4, R.2. This more commonly encountered variety, second only to the JR-1, is most easily attributed by the spacing of stars 10 through 13--which are successively wider--wide spacing between ICA, and recutting on star 2. The finest example listed in the JR reference is an MS63 that appeared in Auction '80. This piece is undoubtedly one of the finest pieces known. The silver-gray surfaces are covered with a pale iridescence that deepens somewhat around the outer devices. Proofs were also struck from this die pairing, and this piece shows a faint glimmer of reflectivity in the fields, indicating it was struck not too long after the few proofs were produced. A light pinscratch running from the foremost curl, down in front of Liberty's nose, requires mention.
