1831[1/2 C] Reverse of 1840 PR63 Red and Brown PCGS.
1831<1/2 C> Reverse of 1840 PR63 Red and Brown PCGS. B-3, R.7. An intricately struck specimen of this important rarity. The centers feature blended orange and rose colors, while the borders have rich apple-green patina. A few wispy hairlines are found above the date, but there are no other detractions.

No Classic Head Half Cents were struck dated 1830, and the 1831 is very rare. Three die marriages are known, each is from the same obverse die but the reverse dies differ noticeably. Originals (Breen 1) feature the Reverse of 1836, which has a bold die line below CENT, a prominent center dot, and a heavy wreath. Once regarded as a proof-only issue, a small number of business strikes from these dies are also known. The First Restrike (Breen 2) also has the Reverse of 1836, but there are positional differences since the lettering was entered by hand into the working die. The Second Restrike (Breen 3) is often referred to as the "Small Berries" variety, although the entire wreath is substantially smaller than on the earlier reverse type, and the heavy dash below CENT is now absent. Probably the rarest of the three varieties, PCGS has certified four examples of Breen-3, compared with six and twelve pieces of Breen-1 and Breen-2, respectively.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
