Fascinating C. 1830s Mirror With Reverse On Glass Scene of the Boston Massacre. Clocks and mirrors with reverse-on-glass panels were very popular from the early 1800s until well into the century. However, paintings only rarely had historical subjects. This is the first we have ever seen depicting the Boston Massacre. What is especially interesting about this piece is that the painted panel is clearly a Chinese import piece! The faces of the soldiers have a rather Asian cast, and the stiff style and arrangement are typically Chinese. Reverse on glass paintings of this series are notoriously prone to flaking, but on the present example, the painting, mirror, and frame are all in beautiful shape; the mirror is clearly original. Painted panel is 8.25" x 6.75". Mirror overall measures 15.5" x 29.5".
