58. [1830 TEXAS]

Coahuila and Texas colonial brand broadside. ADS in Spanish, 1p, small folio, Aqualeguas, May 26, 1830. Field Judge lists stray horses, cattle, and mules that had been turned in, together with their descriptions beside illustrations of brands. These broadsides were posted in a public place in order that ranchers arriving in town could readily see if they had a stray at the public corral. Boldly penned. Light general toning and occasional foxing; else Fine. Almost all Texas cattle industry customs, terminology and practices came from Mexico, i.e. branding, roundups, the function of the field judges, and maverick branding. Very nice example from area just south of the Rio Grande.
