1830 Letter to President Andrew Jackson
1830 Letter to President Andrew Jackson Seeking Consideration For Slavery Law Violation. One page, 7.75” x 9.5”, Newburyport Massachusetts , May 31, 1830, from Samuel Phillips, Customs collector, to Andrew Jackson, Washington City. In this letter a customs collector seeks President Jackson's intercession in a matter involving the violation of the 1818 slave code. The 1818 law concerned the importation of slaves into ports under United States control. Specifically the letter addresses a matter of a certain merchant, John Wood “a respectable Merchant of this place, the owner of the Schooner, New Packet, which was seized some time since at New Orleans, for an alleged violation of the law of 1818, Touching the Slave Trade”. Phillips goes on to extol Wood's virtues and integrity and writes “it was never in the mind of Mr. Wood or his Captain to infringe or evade the law - They have therefore, as I do now, respectfully recommended him to your equitable consideration.” The letter is toned with age and has the usual fold creases. It is addressed to Jackson on the verso. Very good condition. From the collection of Henry E.
