1830<H10C> V-12, LM-10, R.6. Reiver later die state. VF25 NGC. One of the rare newer discoveries (post the original Valentine reference) that remains very difficult to obtain. This particular coin is dark gray throughout and has a few minor surface blemishes in the fields, expected for the grade. The obverse die crack is present from the sixth star to the top of Liberty's curl, another is seen touching the lower point of the eighth star toward Liberty's cap. On the reverse there is a very tiny chip out of the die between the left upright and the diagonal at the top, and these die cracks and chips are normally seen on this rare variety. Logan and McCloskey note that on most examples the talons "exhibit extreme striking weakness" which is not the case here, although the branch above the denomination is a touch weak, the talons are clearly defined.
Despite the discovery of this variety by John Marker in 1975 and the general publication of this variety in 1986, examples remain rare and very few have been auctioned. As with so many Capped Bust half dime varieties, unless a variety can be found unattributed from a dealer, there may be years between offerings at auction.
Ex: D. Mark Smith (December, 1993). Envelope Included.
