Portrait medallion of Alphonse de Lamartine, the French poet and statesman, produced in 1830 by David d’Angers at the time that de Lamartine was received into L'Académie Française. A scarce medallion, other examples are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Musée du Louvre. Notes verso confirm this piece as coming from the collection of Dr. Richard Robert Madden (1798-1886), a well known doctor and historian of the United Irishmen. Both Madden and de Lamartine were instrumental in the movement for the abolition of the slave trade in their respective countries during the mid 19th Century and this perhaps explains why Madden hung this medallion in his library.
