1830 50C Small 0 MS65 ICG. O-110a, R.7?. This is the later die state which has come to light in recent years, and is apparently rather scarce. As always, new discoveries are speculative, all start out as rare and as more coins are confirmed their ratings fall. Where the present die state will end up in a few years is guesswork. Bright and lustrous save for a hint of peripheral gold. The strike is sharp on all of the stars, curls and feathers. A later die state with extensive die rust present on both sides, a die crack extends from the inner points near star 4 to the middle of star 7. There is minor die clashing in the fields with the motto ribbon present under Liberty's bust and the wing of the eagle before Liberty's face. On the reverse, Liberty's head is outlined below each wing. Apparently in the Condition Census for the variety, and a delightful example of this recent die state discovery.
From The Westmoreland, Virginia Collection.
