The color is a deeply set, original, and pleasing green-gold shade, although we also note some suggestions of honey-tan color at certain angles. The surfaces appear a little glossy in texture, but there are no sizeable or individually distracting abrasions. Robert Scot's and William Kneass' Capped Head Left design was employed on the Half Eagle in both large and reduced diameter formats from 1813 through 1834. Unfortunately for today's type collectors, these were not good years for circulating gold coins in the United States. The glut of silver that entered the world market from Mexican and Peruvian mines during this time frame increased the value of gold relative to silver. As a result, most coins of this type were melted as their bullion value increased above their face value. When we offer a Half Eagle of this type at all, it is usually dated 1813. This is only the fourth 1830 Half Eagle to appear in one of our auctions since the early 1990s.From The Collection of Dennis Ridings.
