1829<H10C> MS64 NGC. V-13, LM-4, R.3. This is the first year of the Capped Bust design for the denomination, and there are more varieties of this issue than any other through 1837. A total of 18 die varieties are known from six obverse and 10 reverse dies. The LM-4 combination is from an obverse with the ball of the digit 9 doubled. This obverse was also used for LM-3 and LM-9. The reverse has two pale gules in the shield (each vertical shield stripe has two individual lines). The second T of STATES is higher than the adjacent letters, and this characteristic is diagnostic. Struck from essentially perfect dies with only faint clash marks visible in the reverse field. This is a lovely example with brilliant ivory surfaces accented by faint heather and iridescent toning. The underlying fields are essentially prooflike with full satiny luster. Although not fully struck, this is a nicely detailed example. The surfaces have light abrasions that prevent a Gem classification.
Ex: Heritage (3/1996), lot 5185.
From The William A. Harmon Collection of United States Half Dimes.
