1829<H10C> V-18, LM-11, R-5. AU53 NGC. Early die state for this variety. This die combination was discovered by specialist J. Alan Bricker in 1988 and was published in an article by Jules Reiver in the John Reich Journal Volume 4, Issue 2. Light silver in color with traces of luster in the fields and boldly struck devices. Identifiable by a minor planchet streak through IB to the clasp on Liberty, and on the reverse through the olive leaves. Faint pin lines in the lower right obverse field fail to detract. An early die state struck before the obverse cracks formed to stars four and thirteen, and before the die chip appeared in the N in UNITED.
After the discovery of this new die pairing, few were found initially, but is now considered a tough R.5 variety in the December 2001 JRCS half dime census as variety collectors have really beaten the bushes to find an example. The similar grade coin from the Russell Logan collection brought $1,495 in 2002. An exciting coin and one of the many highlights of the Jules Reiver collection. This coin was purchased by Jules Reiver soon after the discovery of the variety, and this coin was actively contested in that auction. At the time this coin was purchased, only a few were known, and as is the case with most new varieties discovered, some remain extremely rare, others are found in sufficient numbers to fill the demand. Given the strong price paid for the Logan coin over three years ago, demand obviously remains fervent for this die pairing.
Ex: Bowers and Merena's Gore and Long Sale (January 1990), lot 116 at $1,760. Envelope Included.
