1829<1C> Medium Letters. N-5, R.3. AU53 NGC. VF20 EAC. An intermediate die state with minor crumbling along the obverse border. A remarkable coin, and very difficult to grade, due to blunt striking. Mottled olive, chestnut, and steel-brown color, with some cartwheel luster retained, especially on the reverse. This coin was not assigned a grade in the New Netherlands catalog, but was simply described as "a trifle better than the VF-35 Downing coin." It is currently not included in Bill Noyes' Census listing, which records 30 examples, with grades down to VF30. The true grade of this example could be open to debate. Is it VF20, VF30, or even AU53? That is a question that each person will have to answer independently. Remember, though, that according to Sheldon, "ownership is worth five points."
Ex: Walter Breen; New Netherlands (12/1957), lot 1495; Greenwood; Carter; Del Bland (5/27/1970). Envelope Included.
