1829 10C Curl Base 2 Good 4 NGC. JR-10, R.7. Interming 1829[10C] Curl Base 2 JR-10, R.6. Reiver stat
1829<10C> Curl Base 2 JR-10, R.6. Reiver state a. Good 4 NGC. One of the most difficult die pairings to obtain, the curled base 2 obverse was only used to coin this variety, and no other 1829 obverse dies have the curled base 2 feature in the date. Toned a medium to light gray throughout. Examination with a loupe will find a couple of thin scratches in the left and right obverse field, and a small nick right of star six. On the reverse there is a rim nick above ED of UNITED. The wear is smooth and even, and more detail remains than one would expect for the grade. In terms of rarity, this variety has dropped into the R.6 range, but very few are known in grades above VG, and a significant number are damaged to some extent. On this later die state, the obverse has a die crack which extends down from the top through Liberty's cap, the I of LIBERTY, her face and appears below the back of her chin to her bust below, and this crack is probably the reason this obverse die was retired so quickly. Being so easy to attribute, it is doubtful that a significant number remain to be discovered, and most collectors obtain an example when a significant collection like this crosses the auction block. One of the rarest and most sought-after Capped Bust dime varieties.
Ex: Don Frederick (July 1982). Envelope Included.
