1828<50C> Curl Base 2, No Knob AU55 NGC. O-101, R.1. This Overton variety is easily spotted by the curl base 2 with pointed top, and large 8's in the date, with all digits close together. This coin has a 1-mm metal tine protruding from Liberty's bust that is weak on late die states, according to Peterson, yet it is obvious here. Peterson and Overton both note the die break lump in F, also present here, with Peterson noting this is from the late state of the O-101 reverse. Regardless, this coin is lovely as well as intriguing, with original, lustrous dove-gray surfaces accented by bronze highlights, with aqua at the peripheries. The strike is robust, with no mentionable distractions noted. A straight die line, as made, runs from near the gown clasp to T in LIBERTY, and a small die crack connects the clasp to the lowest hair curl on Liberty's neck. An altogether desirable and appealing specimen. Envelope Included.
