1828<$5>--Repaired, Whizzed--ANACS. AU50 Details. Breen-6488, BD-4, High R.6. The extreme rarity of the 1828 is apparent by its dearth of auction appearances. Heritage offered the former Eliasberg specimen, a cleaned AU55, in its 1999 FUN Signature. The present piece provides the only other appearance of the date in a Heritage auction, and its importance to the specialist cannot be overstated. There is no indication of wear, despite the AU50 Details designation on the ANACS insert. Minor softness of strike is seen northwest of Liberty's ear, and on the eagle's left (facing) wing, but the strike is sharp overall. The tan-gold surfaces appear smooth to the unaided eye. Examination beneath a loupe confirms careful tooling of the obverse field, and the occasional granular texture confirms the piece has been whizzed. Nonetheless, a decade might pass before another 1828 (overdate or not) is available on the market, and given the number of advanced collectors who lack an example, it is certain that a strong bid will be required to seize this fleeting opportunity.
From The Antigo Collection, Part Two.
