Although this example is representative of an extremely common variety, one which is extensively known in Mint State, the Reiver Collection specimen is an early die state example and quite scarce as such. Most Mint State examples of this variety are from the "Collins Hoard," discovered in the 1890s, when those coins were brought into the coin shop of Benjamin Collins. It is likely that the hoard coins were mostly if not all the usually seen die state, State 4. If that is the case, this example has survived through the usual collecting channels, and was not part of the hoard. Fully lustrous surfaces with chocolate-brown toning at the left side of the obverse and into the bust, the balance of the obverse being bright gold, faded from original red. The reverse is almost entirely lustrous light tan with hints of mint red color.
Ex: New Netherlands (1941); Harold Bareford; William Bareford (5/25/1984). Envelope Included.
