1827 50C Square Base 2 MS64 NGC. O-112a, R.4. From a Superior sale where it was offered unattributed, it appears that this piece may be the finest known example of the late die state, and probably one of the three or four finest of the variety. Most of the design details of this near-Gem are sharply defined. Satiny luster is hidden beneath attractive gray color with subtle gold and iridescent toning.
The obverse has two prominent die cracks. The first stars at the lower border, passes between the 8 and 2, grazes the left edge of the drapery clasp, and terminates at the hair lock above. The other crack passes between the digit 7 and star 13, continuing faintly through the hair curls to the ear.
Ex: Superior (5/2004), lot 1461.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
