1827 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Breen-6131, BD-1, R.5. Only one quarter eagle die was prepared for the 1827-dated coinage as the reverse die remained in use from the previous date of 1826. The obverse die is perfect with no clash marks or die cracks. The reverse has faint clash marks below the left scroll end and below the S in PLURIBUS. Other faint clash marks below the right wing continue through the arrows.
The source of the reverse clash marks is not known. The reverse die clashed with the 1826 obverse, was lapped, and apparently clashed again with the 1827 obverse. If the reverse was lapped to remove the 1826 clash marks at the same time the dies were changed, then the clash marks on this piece are from the 1827 obverse. Otherwise, they could be from either obverse if the reverse was lapped after 1827 coinage began.
Only a trace of highpoint wear is evident on this pleasing green-gold specimen. A few insignificant imperfections are visible on each side, but the surfaces retain nearly full satin luster. Census: 5 in 58, 20 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
