1827<$2 1/2> AU55 PCGS. Bass-3025, Breen (Encyclopedia)-6131, Breen (Monograph)-1. R.5. Members of the large diameter Capped Head design quarter eagles, minted from 1821 to 1827, are all rare without exception. The 1826 and 1827 issues are without doubt the rarest of these rare coins. Because of a much lower recorded mintage (760 coins) in 1826, this former year is considered to be much rarer than the higher (2,800 coins) mintage 1827-dated issue. In reality, both dates seem to be of approximately equal rarity, suggesting that many of the coins from the 1827 mintage were actually dated 1826. It is quite possibly the case that about 1,700 examples of each date were actually produced. Only one die variety is known for each of these two dates.
The obverse design features are typically weak with the hair curls below the cap lacking crisp detail. Nearly every surviving example of this issue, and of the design type, are much weaker on the obverse. Rich honey-gold surfaces with deeper orange highlights. This Choice AU quarter eagle has very smooth surfaces although some microscopic imperfections are noted.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
