1827<$2 1/2> AU55 NGC. Bass-3025, Breen-6131, R.5. Quarter eagles and half eagles from the 1810s and 1820s were melted in large quantities--the vast majority of their relatively small mintages, that is--in the early 1830s when their gold content exceeded the face value. As of this writing, NGC has graded 30 examples of this issue in all grades, while PCGS has graded 26 examples. Given the considerable price differentials from one grade level to the next, it is likely that those figures include more than the usual percentage of resubmissions. The highpoints of this piece are yellow-gold, while the fields on each side include copper-gold, magenta, and pale blue. This example shows a bold strike, save for the hair over Liberty's ear and the eagle's upper wings, with a few grade-consistent light abrasions. A rare opportunity to acquire this early quarter eagle. Census: 2 in 55, 27 finer (4/06).
