1826 HK-1 Erie Canal Completion Medal MS61 NGC
1826 HK-1 Erie Canal Completion Medal MS61 NGC. White metal. This is the highly desirable and collectible medal issued to mark the completion of the Erie Canal, or the "Union of Erie with the Atlantic" as inscribed on the obverse. The project was commissioned on July 4, 1817 and completed on October 26, 1825. This medal was issued by the Common Council of the City of New York, with dies engraved by Charles Cushing Wright after designs by Archibald Robertson. It is the first medal listed in the 1963 standard reference by Hibler and Kappen. This pleasing piece has attractive pewter-gray crystalline surfaces that are splashed with accents of darker toning on both sides. Faint lines on the reverse emerge upon inspection beneath a loupe. In our 2007 Long Beach Signature, we sold an NGC MS60 example of this same medal for $5,750.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
