<B>1826 HK-1 Erie Canal Completion, MS61 NGC.</B></I> White metal. This is the highly desirable and collectible medal issued to mark the completion of the Erie Canal, or the "Union of Erie with the Atlantic" as inscribed on the obverse. The project was commissioned on July 4, 1817 and completed on October 26, 1825. This medal was issued by the Common Council of the City of New York, with dies engraved by Charles Cushing Wright after designs by Archibald Robertson. This pleasing piece has attractive pewter-gray surfaces that are splashed with darker toning on both sides. It is the first medal listed in the 1963 standard reference by Hibler and Kappen.
