1826<50C> PR64 PCGS. O-101, R.2. (R.7 as a proof). When Walter Breen authored his proof Encyclopedia after years of extensive observation, he had never heard of this variety being used to produce a proof striking. Later, when Breen added another fifteen years of numismatic research and note taking, producing his magnificent Complete Encyclopedia, he did note that one proof was reported from this die pairing, and this may well be that coin. All told, the proof mintage for 1826 Half Dollars is thought to have been less than ten coins, most being from the O-102 die marriage.
One of the most appealing aspects of this rarity is the phenomenal color. The margins have splendid cobalt-blue accents while the centers are primarily pearl-gray and golden-rose. The major design elements are frosted, and provide ample contrast with the subtly reflective fields. Beneath the bust of Liberty, there are faint pinscratches extending nearly to the date, and these will serve to identify this coin in the future. An important rarity for the advanced Bust Half Dollar collector. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer, NGC has certified a single PR65 (6/05).
