1826<$5>--Repaired, Whizzed--ANACS. AU50 Details. Breen-6485, BD-1, R.5. The Capped Head Left half eagle is one of the most difficult U.S. types to acquire. A few dates, such as the 1813, 1818, 1820, and 1823, emerge upon occasion, while the other dates are significant rarities. The 1826 appears at auction only every few years, usually in Mint State and out of the reach of most collectors. This impaired example presents an opportunity to the specialist to obtain a piece at an affordable level. The fields are lightly hairlined and suspiciously smooth, although only the left obverse field has tell-tale ripples from a repair. The "Whizzed" notation is unduly harsh. Designated as AU50 details by ANACS, but only a whisper of friction is evident on the cap and drapery. Softness on Liberty's ear is due to the strike, which is otherwise sharp.
From The Antigo Collection, Part Two.
