1826/5 $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Bass-3024, the only known dies, R.5. Judging by original mintage figures, the Quarter Eagle was not the most popular denomination among gold bullion depositors at the early Philadelphia Mint. No issue delivered prior to 1834 was produced in numbers greater than 6,812 pieces. In the case of the 1826/5, the total amounted to just 760 pieces. (Actually, the overdate attribution is incorrect for this date with the abnormalities seen under the 6 most likely the result of recutting. The 2003 Guide Book, however, still lists this issue as 1826/5.) The 1826/5 rivals the 1827 as the rarest 1821-1827 Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle. Uncirculated survivors of the former issue are virtually unobtainable (only two coins have been so graded at NGC and PCGS, 1/03), and near-Mint examples are only slightly less rare. The coin that we are offering in this lot retains ample evidence of a prooflike finish. Green-gold color overlays both sides, the surfaces of which are peppered with small and moderate abrasions from a short stint in circulation. Overall bold in detail, and sure to see significant competition among early gold specialists. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
