1826<1/2 C> C-2, B-2, High R.3. Die State 2--Environmental Damage--NCS. AU Details. XF40 EAC. 6 over horizontal 6; High leaf below center of S. Traces of the original 6 are still visible, but they are never bold on this variety. The digit 6 was initially punched lying on its back, and then repunched upright. This is mostly visible to the right of the knob and lower curve of the final digit, and it is seldom visible on lower grade examples. Die wear or use does not play a role in the reduced visibility of the date blunder, as will be seen in the next lot. Few examples of the 1826 Cohen-2 variety are known in Mint State, probably not more than four or five. Breen listed five Mint State examples but continued to say that four of the five had not been seen by him. Most recently, Bill Noyes recorded five Mint State specimens. Even that figure may be optimistic. Although this steel and golden-brown example is clearly not Mint State, it is not that far away, and is an important coin for specialist collectors. A few light abrasions are noted, and the surfaces have minor verdigris and localized corrosion, much of which can be removed or diminished with the proper care and conservation techniques. Envelope Included.
