1825 Charleston PORTER Slave Hire Badge. Number 478. A flat diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole at the top for suspension, 64mm x 66mm. The "LAFAR" hallmark of John Joseph LaFar is punched on the obverse at the bottom; this would be the last year of the three-year period where his hallmark was on the obverse instead of the reverse. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "*CHARLESTON*" in a crescent-shaped bar punch ("CH" weak); "1825" bar punched; "PORTER" in a rectangular punch; "No" in a square punch followed by an incuse "478" in individual punches; and, as mentioned, "LAFAR" in a rectangular punch. The condition of this tag is fine with an olive green patina. There is a crease running diagonally across the badge.

It is estimated that 3269 badges were manufactured with this date.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
