1825<50C> MS66 NGC. O-101, R.1. Although not attributed as such on the NGC holder, this is a common variety for 1825, the O-101 variety. Among the diagnostics for this variety are the star 13 that nearly touches Liberty's lowest hair curl, while on the reverse ME touch at their bases and the D and S in UNITED STATES are close, appearing as one word. However ... this coin is not at all common, in fact it is extremely uncommon and conditionally rare, in this example's Premium Gem state of preservation. Original cartwheel mint luster emanates from deep rainbow toning in concentric circles from lime-green to deep aqua, with copper-orange centers. This coin is remarkably free of even minor marks or luster grazes, with diligent searching required to note a small tick on Liberty's ear lobe that will serve as a future pedigree marker. The strike is pleasing, with nearly all of the star centrils full, although a bit soft on Liberty's highpoint hair curls and the eagle's claws. The coin is perfectly centered, with full, bold dentilation on obverse and reverse. Both dies show moderate die erosion, as struck, with the star points and letters showing metal flow toward the peripheries. As of this writing (11/05), NGC has certified a total of seven 1825 coins of all varieties (attributed or not) in MS66, with three coins graded higher. The highest NGC-certified O-101 examples are three coins graded MS62. If NGC had certified this coin as an O-101, it would be the highest graded example by four points! A stunningly beautiful coin that is sure to find a home in the finest type or Bust half cabinet.
