1825/3<25C> "E" Counterstamp B-2, R.6--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. Die State I. Close overdate; High 25 with small 5. In Volume 16, Issue 1 of the John Reich Journal (July, 2004), Ted McAuley theorized that the "E" and "L" counterstamps sometimes seen on quarter dollar coins of 1815 and 1825 were the result of a schism within an Eighteenth Century religious sect of Economy, Pennsylvania, known as the Harmony Society. He speculated that the counterstamped coins were used as voting tokens in an election to decide the leadership of that group. This example is lightly toned and only shows a trace amount of highpoint wear on either side. Well struck and blemish-free, save for an abrasion that extends diagonally from close to 9 o'clock on the obverse rim, crossing upwards to pass just beneath star 4. Slightly subdued, but otherwise seemingly unharmed by an old, improper cleaning.
Ex: Numismatic Enterprises; Julian Leidman (4/1986). Envelope Included.
