September 23, 1824, “Marquis de Lafayette,” American Tour Imprint Invitation, Philadelphia, Choice Very Fine.
This exceedingly rare original printed Letter Invitation is Signed, "Jas S. Lewis", one page, 8vo, at Philadelphia, to James N. Barker, with Integral Envelope. At this time, the Marquis de Lafayette had accepted President James Monroe’s personal invitation to visit the United States and he toured the country during 1824 and 1825. As a Revolutionary War Hero and dear friend to George Washington, Lafayette was feted wherever he went. This letter regards his upcoming triumphal return visit to Philadelphia. It reads in part:

"Dear Sir, - General Lafayette will be received by the Corporation of the City of Philadelphia, in the Hall of Independence, on the 28th instant, at 2 o’clock, P.M. and will dine with them on the next day at 5 P.M. in the building adjoining the Mansion House

The Committee of Arrangement will be gratified by your participation in the ceremony of his reception -- and request the pleasure of your company at the subsequent dinner.

You will please to present the enclosed tickets to the respective door keepers. - By order of the Committee. - (Signed) “Jas. S. Lewis” Chairman.” - “P.S. - A wrong envelope was sent yesterday with your tickets.”

An extraordinary document in very clean condition and the first we have ever offered. The reverse has a docket which reads, “Sept. 1824 - Lafayette - Corporation Dinner, Etc.” Considering that Lafayette’s Society of Cincinnatus Medal given to him on this tour just sold for in excess of $4,000,000. (Four Million Dollars), this historic association piece should be well worth our estimate.
