1824<50C> Overdate XF40--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. O-103, R.1. This is the well known and popular variety that Al Overton described as "1824 over a jumble of recuttings." Glenn R. Peterson, M.D., in the second edition of his book The Ultimate Guide To Attributing Bust Half Dollars, suggests that the date is an 1824 over 22 over 20, and Walter Breen's Encyclopedia comments "the ill. shows 2 and 0 plainly; traces of other digits, possibly 3 and 1, but these do not always show." This coin's early die state matches the Peterson photo (earlier state than the Breen photo), with the remains of an underdigit (bottom serif of the 2?) forming a tiny, nearly perfect square with the crossbar and serif of the 4. The O-103 attribution is confirmed by the A and M in AMERICA's counterclockwise rotation compared to the other letters. Although once cleaned, after conservation this coin remains attractive, combining uniform bluish-gray color with some grade-consistent highpoint wear.
Ex: Eric Gutscher (11/2/1986). Envelope Included.
