1824/2<10C> JR-2, R.5. Reiver state a. VF25 NGC. A very attractive coin for the grade with dark blue and gold toning over the usual gray hues. The strike is sharp for this issue, although the curls on Liberty are a bit weak. Excellent surfaces for the grade, with no distractions. Identifiable by a complex nick to the right of the eagle's neck and below the UM in the scroll, and there are two dark specks, one adhering to the O in OF, the other in the right claw of the eagle.
This variety was discovered by H. Rolland Willasch just prior to the publication of Early United States Dimes 1796 -1837 but in time to be included in the book. Considered extremely rare after the initial search through the known variety collections, the intervening two decades have discovered quite a few specimens reducing this to an R.5. The overdate feature is clear to the eye, and the top of the 1 in the denomination is curved as opposed to flat on the other 1824 dime variety. The 1822 obverse die was not used in 1822, but apparently leftover and then overdated in 1824 and used to coin both known varieties of 1824 dimes.
Ex: Bill Conroy (May 1986). Envelope Included.
