1824 (1816) Large Cent With Washington-Lafayette Counterstamp AU50 NGC. Baker-198C. Brunk L-46. Enlisting in the French army at the age of 14, Lafayette rose to captain in 1776. He served with distinction at the battles of Brandywine, Monmouth, and Yorktown. He visited the United States again in 1824 amid great pomp and ceremony. Counterstamped coins, such as this one, were made by Joseph Lewis. They were allegedly thrown from carriages in the general's procession to the crowds that lined the streets of the towns through which the general passed. Examples are known on large cents of various dates, an 1824 dime, two half dollars, a one real, and a two reales piece. Small medals of this same design are also known in gold, silver, and white metal.
It has been several years since we have offered one of these historic medals at auction. This piece shows good detail on the counterstamps. However, there are numerous small abrasions at the forefront of Washington's portrait, several tiny digs in the left field of the counterstamp, and a couple of pinscratches in the same area. The host coin has VF details with a few shallow pinscratches through UNITED STATES. Deep, even brown patina.
