1824/1 $2 1/2 XF40 PCGS. Bass-3019, the only known dies, R.4. Rich, deeply set, green-gold color overlays both sides with some more vibrant yellow-gold shadings evident at direct angles. Remnants of a semi-prooflike finish flash in the fields, and the lightly worn features are boldly detailed in most areas. The centers, however, are a little softly defined, as are many of the obverse star centrils. Still, this is an important and pleasing circulated survivor of this, the second lowest mintage (2,600 pieces) issue in the Capped Head Left Quarter Eagle series. Both sides are somewhat scuffy with scattered light and moderate abrasions. Surprisingly, the 1824/1 is the second most available date of its type in today's market. From The Collection of Dennis Ridings.
