1824/1 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Breen-6127, BD-1, R.5. Only one pair of dies is known for 1824-dated quarter eagles, and all are regarded as overdates, although barely a trace of the underdigit is apparent on the present example. The 1824/1 is very rare, a fact confirmed by the dearth of Heritage auction appearances: just three within the past five years. Since the other two pieces were both circulated and impaired, the significance of the present original and problem-free example to the early gold specialist cannot be over-emphasized. The strike is slightly soft on the shield, and a few trivial adjustment marks are present on the left obverse border. There are no relevant marks, and a few minuscule ticks between the cap and star 11 are mentioned solely for pedigree purposes. Census: 5 in 61, 3 finer (9/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
