1824/1<$2 1/2>--Ex: Jewelry--ANACS. VF20 Details. Bass-3019, Breen-6127, R.4, the only known dies. The early years of the 19th century saw few quarter eagles produced. Mintages were low from 1796 through 1807, low again in 1808, then the denomination began to be struck again in 1821 but only 6,448 pieces were minted. Three years later the 1824 was coined, using an altered 1821 die, but again the mintage was low with only 2,600 pieces struck. This particular coin saw several years of use in the channels of commerce, then it was used as a jewelry piece. Apparently the evidence of it usage as jewelry is on the edge, as there is no obvious tooling on either side. The surfaces have been cleaned and there are also numerous small abrasions scattered over the obverse and reverse. This piece gives the collector an opportunity to acquire this elusive type in a more affordable grade, and as such should be of interest to a number of bidders.
From The Steve Glenn Collection, Part Two.
