<B>1823 50C MS64 NGC.</B></I> O-106a, R.2. This later die state is slightly more plentiful than the early die state. Overton wrote: "Although in this variety the three is a bit rough and irregular, it is not any of the varieties known as the broken, patched, or ugly 3s." Despite his comment, examples of this die variety and die state are occasionally offered as Patched 3 pieces. A frosty Mint State coin, this piece has pleasing ivory luster with splashes of mottled olive-gold toning, slightly more evident near the borders. The strike is well centered and the denticles are fully formed, although we note that most of the stars lack centrils and are beginning to draw toward the rims. The central devices, in contrast, are smartly impressed with even the uppermost hair curl and the eagle's talons rising boldly above their backdrops.
