1823 $5 MS62 NGC.<p>B. 1-A, Miller-146, the only known dies, High R.5. The Capped Head Right Half Eagles of 1813-1829 are the most challenging gold coins to collect in U.S. numismatics. Not only were these coins produced in modest numbers, but most examples were exported to Europe and melted in the early 1830s when their bullion value exceeded their face value. A good indicator of the rarity of these coins can be seen in the estimated survival rate of the most common date in the series, the first-year 1813. Only 200 coins are believed extant from an original mintage of 95,428 pieces. While we occasionally offer representatives of the 1813 delivery, we have not sold an 1823 Half Eagle of similar quality to this MS62 representative since 1992. The Philadelphia Mint produced just 14,485 Half Eagles this year using the same reverse die as for the 1821 and 1824-dated deliveries. Just 20-25 coins are believed to have survived in all grades. In addition to its undeniable rarity, the present example is noteworthy for a bold overall strike and pleasing semi-prooflike tendencies in the fields. We do note that the strike is a little uneven with some softness of detail here and there, but all major features are suitably well defined. The lightly abraded surfaces are overlaid in copper-gold iridescence. A significant bidding opportunity for the advanced gold specialist. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
