1823 $5 MS61 NGC. B. 1-A, Breen-6481, Bass-3145, High R.5. Only a single die marriage is known for this date. The Capped Bust Left half eagle series likely has suffered higher attrition rates than any other U.S. coin series, due to the widespread and extensive meltings that occurred in the 1830s when these pieces' intrinsic value exceeded their face value. A note in the Bass Museum Sylloge under Bass-3143 (1821 half eagle) reads, "This issue begins the trend of very rare half eagles, which continues throughout the decade. Interestingly, several die varieties exist for extremely low populations, suggesting that the recorded mintages are realistic, despite very low survival rates." The same reverse die was used for half eagle issues from 1820 through 1824, and again in 1826, featuring a letter punch that had a triangular notch at the base of the upright of the T's in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The 1823, while still quite rare, is one of the most available issues from the 1820s. This piece shows a few light, undistracting adjustment marks through the central obverse, and a bit of the usually seen strike weakness on the eagle's claws and the leftmost olive leaves; otherwise, the striking details are complete. The surfaces overall are bright yellow-gold with a semi-reflective finish evident in the fields. A few small marks are scattered over each side, but the only one that bears mention is located in the reverse field between the eagle's right (facing) wing and the ME of AMERICA. Population: 5 in 61, 16 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
