1823/2 25C B-1, R.6. Good 4 NGC. Die State I. Overdate 1823/2[25C] B-1, R.6. Good 4 NGC. Die State I
1823/2<25C> B-1, R.6. Good 4 NGC. Die State I. Overdate; Incomplete arrows. Well worn and essentially problem-free, with a couple of shallow indentations on the portrait, a full date with the overdate feature still plainly visible, and nearly full details on the letters IBERTY. There are a pair of small puncture marks in the field area just to the left of Liberty's face, and lowest arrowhead on the reverse is incompletely made. A very pleasing example of this exceedingly scarce issue. Only 17,800 were minted, and very few of that number survive to the present day, in any condition.
What happened to all the 1823 quarters? No one knows for sure, but obviously most have long since disappeared. This date has been one of the rarest issues produced by the Philadelphia Mint and is similar in rarity to the 1802 half dime. Most show extensive circulation, and are frequently damaged in some form. For the variety collector, obtaining any example of this date is a major challenge, both financially and because there are so few offered. A considerable opportunity for the collector who wishes to purchase a moderate grade--but very pleasing example of this coveted date.
Ex: Hollinbeck Kagin (10/1969). Envelope Included.
