1823/2 10C Large Es MS65 NGC. JR-3, R.2. The NGC holde
1823/2 10C Large Es MS65 NGC. JR-3, R.2. The NGC holder incorrectly identifies this as the JR-2 variety, but the diagnostic seventh star points to Liberty's headband, not her upper curl. Toned with deep gunmetal-gray with complex blue and rose-gold accents mixed into the surfaces. Gem quality Capped Bust dimes are very scarce indeed, and the present coin boasts not only a sharp strike, but excellent surfaces and appealing color. Although the eagle's claws are not quite full, Liberty's curls and the eagle's feathers are all sharp. Identifiable by a faint hairline just above the left wing of the eagle, well below his beak. Evidence of die clashing is found in the left obverse field, with long straight lines present near the center of that area, a result of the dies coming together without a planchet between them and the eagle's wing being struck into the obverse die field. Additional clashing evidence is found above the date from the scroll on the reverse. The overdate feature is clear with a loupe, as the base of the 2 extends to the right of the 3, and the neck of the 2 is visible within the lower loop of the 3. This obverse die was not used to strike 1822 dimes (the obverse used to coin the JR-2 variety was overdated from the coining die used in 1822). For the specialist, this is certainly one of the top dozen examples of this date, and tied with a select group qualifying in the Gem grade. Census: 6 in 65, 2 finer (1/06).
