1823 1C MS63 Brown NGC and EAC. Restrike, Die Stat 1823 1C MS63 Brown NGC and EAC. Restrike, Die State VI, R.3. At the 1996 Coinage of the America's Conference held at the ANS headquarters in New York City, this cataloger presented a paper about the "restrike" large cents of 1804, 1810, and 1823. The 1804 and 1823 copper restrikes are well-known issues, but the 1804 and 1810 tin restrikes, as well as the 1823 silver restrikes are not nearly so well known. It is important to understand that none of these restrikes were actually made by or at the United States Mint. It is not known who actually produced these pieces, although Mickley is a name often speculated, solely because it is known that his estate contained old dies from the Philadelphia Mint.
The 1823 restrikes were produced beginning in 1861 or 1862. The earliest known auction record was in W. Elliott Woodward's sale of the Finotti Collection that was held in November 1862. The 1804 cent restrikes were first produced a few years later, probably in 1868. Nearly all of the 1804 restrikes are approximately the same die state and were most likely produced at the same time. The 1823 restrikes are known in several different die states from "perfect" dies with only the obverse rim break of the original 1823 large cents, to late die states with shattered dies. The example in this lot is from the latest die state seen to date: Obverse rim breaks extend from star 4 to star 7. A bisecting crack extends from the rim break between stars 4 and 5, across Liberty's head, and through star 12 to the rim. A branch extends from Liberty's cheek to the border between stars 1 and 2. The reverse has a curved die crack from the border through the wreath, over ONE, back through the wreath, and down through R to the border. A branch of this crack extends up through the wreath to the border between TE of STATES. Die rust is visible on both sides, especially on the reverse. It is believed that these late die state pieces were struck several years later, probably in the 1870s. A small number of silver restrikes of this issue are known, and are all in the latest die state.
The obverse has reflective, prooflike surfaces with satiny luster on the reverse. Both sides have excellent surfaces with lovely olive-brown color and iridescent toning. The reverse has traces of faded original red. All details are sharply defined. All of the restrikes, while technically not large cents, are highly collectible as part of the large cent series, and are included in all the standard references and price catalogs.
Ex: Del Bland (8/84).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:3481
