1822 25C 25/50C MS63 NGC. B-2, High R.5. There are only two known die marriages for the 1822 Capped Bust quarter, and B-2 with the desirable 25/50 C. feature is by far the most difficult to obtain in all grades. Indeed, the 1822 B-2 is one of the key varieties in the Capped Bust quarter series. The total number of 1822 pieces coined was 64,080 pieces, and appears to have been made with one obverse and two reverse dies. A.W. Browning writes, in The Early Quarter Dollars of the United States, 1796-1838: Three other obverse evidently were prepared, which subsequently became overdates, and which vary from the regular obverse of the year. See 1823, 1824, and No. 1, of 1825."

Browning, in elaborating on the 25 over 50 in his Number 2 1822 variety, writes: "...the engraver evidently mistook the die for that of a 50-cent piece, then corrected the error;..." Walter Breen, in his Complete Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins, says: "The 1822 with blundered reverse (25 over 50) is very rare, not because of die failure, but because this die was laid aside in horror as soon as impressions were examined. It was briefly resurrected in 1828, when the new Mint Engraver William Kneass could blame it on his late predecessor, and excuse its exhumation on grounds of economy." (Breen is alluding here to the 1828 Browning-3 variety, that employed the blundered 25 over 50 reverse that was used with the 1822 Browning -2.)

The MS63 coin presented here displays lustrous golden-gray surfaces accented with wisps of cobalt-blue, lavender, and golden-brown toning. Excellent definition is apparent in the design elements, except for softness in some of the star centers. The dentilation is bold on both sides, and the motifs are well centered. Close examination reveals no significant marks. All in all, quite a pleasing rare 1822 B-2 quarter.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
