General Land Office patent issued for 80 acres to Thomas Ellis of Wayne County, Ohio on Sept. 20th, 1821. Signed by President James Monroe and Commissioner of the General Land Office Josiah Meigs. James Monroe (1758-1831) was the fifth president of the United States (1817-1825) and a Founding Father known for the "Era of Good Feelings," marked by national unity and westward expansion. A veteran of the Revolutionary War, he held roles as U.S. senator, governor of Virginia, diplomat, and Secretary of State and War before becoming president. His administration is best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, which warned European powers against further colonization in the Americas. Josiah Meigs (1757-1822) was an American academic, lawyer, and government official who served as the first president of the University of Georgia and later as Commissioner of the U.S. General Land Office. He also worked as a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Yale and contributed to early American scientific and educational development.
