1821 $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. Quarter eagles began with the 1796 No Stars, followed by the 1796-1807 Stars, then the one-year 1808 Capped Bust Left. Then production ceased until 1821 with the debut of the Capped Head Left (1821-1834). Yet the diameter and device sizes changed in 1829, making the 1821-1827 a unique and scarce sub-type unto itself. Among these various types, diameters changed. Diameter began at 20 mm, moved to 18.5 mm in 1821, and finally 18.2 mm in 1829. Changing the thickness kept the denomination at its authorized weight. The first examples were proofs and since so few business strikes were coined after the proofs, nearly all have reflective surfaces.
The Act of June 28th, 1834 reduced the quarter eagle's weight from 67.5 grains to 64.5 grains, which resulted in melting many earlier versions including an unknown number of the 6,448 pieces struck in 1821.
This is truly a scarce type coin with only 40 coins certified in all grades at both PCGS and NGC. This specimen clearly belongs near center-stage in any early type gold collection. The fields are predictably prooflike and the devices are well defined. The only mentionable marks are a scratch near the obverse rim at 2 o'clock and a diagonal mark on the upper portion of Liberty's portrait. Bright yellow-gold color, as usual.

Coin Engraver: John Reich

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
