1821<$2 1/2> AU58 NGC. Bass-3018, Breen-6126, R.4. The sole dies used for this rare date. After a gap of thirteen years, production of quarter eagles resumed in 1821. John Reich's reverse design was retained from the single-year 1808 Capped Bust type, but his head of Liberty was modified by Chief Engraver Robert Scot. Liberty's profile and short bust truncation is reminiscent of Scot's Matron Head cent motif. The 1821 has a mintage of 6,448 pieces which, while very low, proved to be the largest emission of the type. But the 1821 is just as difficult to locate as the other dates, with the exception of the final year 1834 and the ultra-low mintage 1826. Typically, U.S. gold coins from the era were exported and melted shortly after their production. The present partly lustrous example is only moderately abraded, and the strike is good despite slight softness on the left border of the shield.
